It wasn’t very long ago that I thought GMOs were perfectly safe. I ate them all the time, and didn’t worry about it.  

Not one bit.  

I remember when I first saw the March 2015 National Geographic cover article on “The War on Science”. It equated the belief that “genetically modified food is evil” with the belief that “the moon landing was fake.”  

I absorbed it, and allowed the tacit assumption to sink in—that any scientifically-minded, sane individual knows GMOs are just fine, and all the hoopla is nothing but ignorant, woo-woo fanaticism.  

I went on my merry way, grateful to have one less thing to be concerned about as I studied labels in the grocery store.

Just one month later, my world got turned upside down.

I was floored.  

Flattened.

Stunned.  

I was listening to the Food Revolution Summit of 2015, and John Robbins was interviewing Jeffrey Smith on the science of genetically modified foods.

I had no idea.

I realized right then that I’d never actually learned how they make GMOs, and what that process results in.

I scribbled notes as fast as I could.  

I listened to the replay, and fleshed out my notes, to the tune of five single-spaced pages.  

The very next day I walked into my Psychology of Eating classroom and scrapped the day’s lesson in favor of teaching the science of genetically modified foods.

I blew my students’ minds, just like my mind had been blown the day before.

Lives changed. Perspectives changed.

Forever.
